The Black Swan is the creation of Chef James Avery and his business partner Sebastian Walker. Both also own and operate the Mainstay restaurant (formerly the Bonney Read) in Asbury Park. The Black Swan, opened in 2021, is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Irish-British pub, designed to cater to a variety of patrons, from beer and sports enthusiasts to those preferring a more upscale dining experience.

Situated in the historic Byrum Building, a Romanesque fortress built in 1886, the Black Swan spans 5,000 square feet and accommodates indoor seating for 150, with additional outdoor tables. Its British-styled decor creates a warm, cozy atmosphere, with the space divided into four separate areas to cater to different preferences.

Chef Avery, who leads the culinary team at The Black Swan, is a chef with impressive credentials. He received his formal culinary training at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and honed his skills under renowned chefs like David Burke and Michael Mina. He has also served as a consulting chef on Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares." Prior to opening The Black Swan, he was the Executive Chef of the Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten and remains the Executive Chef/Partner at the Mainstay.

The Black Swan's menu is innovative and approachable, featuring a range of cultural influences. Dishes include Indian-inspired curries, pastas, Shepherd's Pie, Fish and Chips, steaks, and other popular pub-style comfort foods, catering to diverse tastes.

The restaurant is housed in an old bank building, with a unique decor that includes flowers and a dark ceiling, creating an almost outdoor dining experience. Patrons have noted the excellent service and the quality of dishes like bacon taters and mash.
